5 Incredible things to do in London (Christmas 2019)
See Christmas Lights in Oxford Circus and Carnaby Street
If you are in London this December 2019 the first thing you cannot miss are the Christmas lights in Oxford Circus and Carnaby Street. This year, in Oxford Circus, 222,000 lights will light up one of the most famous shopping street of the world. Oxford Street is incredibly busy in this period of the year (they say that around 1 million people are expected to go there for the Christmas shopping). Anyway it is the right place to be if you need some ideas for your Christmas shopping and even better, the place to be on 26th December (Boxing Day) when all shops – Selfridges included – start their sales……Hurra’!!! 🙂
Carnaby Street instead has a new ocean theme this year aimed at increasing the feeling of protection of our earth, ocean included. You will then see dolphins, sea horses and corals made of recycled material sparkle above your head!!!
However, if you are around do not miss the Christmas lights of Regent Street and Old Bond Street. You will be amazed!!
Spend your evening at the most panoramic bar in town, the Gerkin
First of all, I have to explain that the Gherkin is a commercial skyscraper in London’s financial district, the City of London. It was completed in December 2003 and opened in April 2004.
If you want to spend some quality time watching the most beautiful London skylines you have to go to the cocktail bat, atop the Gherkin. Overlooking London on level 40, IRIS bar is the eye of the city. The bar is incredible and its interior is also heavily inspired by the building’s geometric shape.
If you feel that you want to treat yourself to a nice lunch or dinner, you have to go to level 39 of the Gherkin, at the Helix restaurant, and relax sitting at one of the beautiful tables, eating British modern contemporary cuisine. I went there for dinner and I have to say I had an amazing experience, sitting on the 39 floor and watching the lights outside!!

Skate at the Ice Rink at the Natural History Museum in South Kensington
This is a must in London! Adults and Kids have not to miss the London ice rinks at the Natural History Museum. The atmosphere is magic, especially with the Christmas lights in the evening. There is also a beautiful and big 30ft Christmas tree and mulled wine and a vintage carousel on the sides. The ice rinks are open until 6th January; Open most days from 10am – 9pm, adult tickets start from £15.95 and can be booked here.
Before or after skating is also worth to have a walk in South Ken, just around the corner you have the Victoria and Albert Museum and a big choice of restaurants, bar and cafés.
Have food a the Maltby Street Market
Another interesting place to visit is the Maltby Street Market, in Bermondsey – 41 Maltby St, London SE1 3PA – easy accessible by Jubilee line.
It opened in 2010 and since then, gained popularity for his street food and ambience. The market takes place inside some Victorian railway arches which creates a sort of villlage vibe. It is quite small, around 30 artisan food and drink sellers, but the quality is very high. You can eat salted caramel brownies at Bad Brownie’s, drink gin at the Little Bird Gin distillery or eat Mozambique-style hot sauces with peri-peri meats. And much more…
Just remember that the market is open 9am-5pm on Saturdays and 11am-5pm on Sunday
